About

What?

Tracking the most important performance metric for operating systems: the minimum time possible to get to a usable ed(1). The time from power-on (or the launch equivalent for a virtual machine) to having ed(1) open and ready for editing.

Why?

ed(1) is the standard text editor.

Someone was lamenting the fact that dedicated writing devices like the AlphaSmart can boot into a usable editing environment really quickly, but doing something similar using, say, a Raspberry Pi and a stock linux distribution takes eons. We wondered how low you could get the time between power on and an ed(1) prompt in various environments.

It's a stupid idea that came from an off-hand comment on reddit which I then couldn't get out of my head. So here we are.
